Peak Performance

Athletes

Being an athlete is an extraordinary challenge both physically and mentally. I know this because I was competitive athlete through most of my childhood and adolescence. I traveled the country for competitions and training. My experiences give me insight in what it’s like to be a serious athlete.

After years of training and preparing, the most difficult part of any competition is coping with the mental and emotional toll of stress, anxiety, and enormous pressure. Research shows that with all things being equal, the most “mentally tough” person in a competition is going to win. You’ve prepared your body—let’s help you prepare your mind.

Stress Management-- There is so much added stress that come with being an athlete. We tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be the best we can be and be at the top of our game. The rest of life happens though, and it can be difficult to be your best when there’s a lot going on. I utilize stress reduction techniques to help.

Performance anxiety—This type of anxiety can be absolutely detrimental during a competition. It happens with every kind of sport and it’s completely normal—and manageable. Through mindfulness, guided muscle relaxation, and visualization, we can significantly reduce anxiety around performing and competing.

Managing Time-- As a former athlete, I know the rigor and demand that a sport can put on your life.  Sometimes it feels like there is no time for anything else.  Dating, friendships, and school can all fall to the back-burner, things that "normal" people have time for.  My focus is on how to help you juggle that balancing act and draw boundaries in your life, incorporating the other aspects of your identity.

Recovering from Injury--Facing an injury always sucks, but it's even worse when you're an athlete.  I know the pain of seeing people around you improve and get better and you're just stuck.  It can be frustrating, depressing, and incredibly discouraging. Through exploring your identity and all the things that make you YOU, it can feel less like the end of the world.
